i know this is a hardcore board, but since i'm not in a hardcore band anymore i'm gonna post about... death metal!
this record is littered with hardcore undertones, especially in the breakdowns, as these dudes were from Long Island in the early 90's and are clearly influenced from the early nyhc bands.

I'm posting here to remember to check this out when I get out of work. Interested in starting a straight death metal band in the coming months.

I don't listen to too much death metal, but I've consistently listened to this album for years. Much more than any other death metal album in my limited collection. This might not even be death metal, what do I know?

At the Gates - the red in the sky is ours. Slightly overlooked because of their later releases, but this album still remains one of the best, regardless of geographic location

sweet Pestilence video thanks for posting it.
I back pretty much every band in this thread.
I think comparing Grotesque and ATG is subjective. It's like comparing Nihilist and Entombed. But I think all "four" of these bands kick serious ass

haha well comparing all bands is subjective, thats just the nature of music. nihilist/entombed is a bit of a different scenario as they were literally the same band - exact same songs played with the exact same guitar tone and style, just under a different name. grotesque on the other hand, while sharing members with ATG, played in a much more primitive, straight forward and ripping style. i personally feel that style is plays out a lot more effectively, and grotesque played with a kind of savagery that few bands could approach. as much as i like red in the sky, both for musical and historical reasons, in my book it doesn't age too well. RitSiO's influence caused tons of bands to pop up in the mid-late 90s that beat that sound to death and while its not fair to blame the originator for its second rate imitators, the glut of bands knocking off their style from that time caused me to lose interest real quick. its still a good album, but one i rarely listen to, especially when "in the embrace of evil" does it so much better for me. just my two cents anyways...

Bloody vengeance- Nihilist kicked out their bass player (who then formed Unleashed, solid band) and then immediately reformed as Entombed ;] but I feel you on Grotesque. You've inspired me to dust off my copy of ItEoE
Z-altars of madness is such a landmark album in the genre. Somewhat off topic, I had a sweet AoM zipup hoodie that I naively lent to this girl I was talking to because we were out and she was cold. I shouldve let the bitch freeze to death, she subsequently "lost" that hoodie. Never again.

I have not read it but I'm always tempted to buy it when I'm at vintage vinyl. I have read Choosing Death which focuses more on American death metal but it contains some good interviews. The soundtrack is solid as well
