I always appreciated a good moshers. I remember being 16 @ studio one and seeing rat bones slam skank and just clobber dudes. It was not like anything I'd ever seen before. For me "moshing" is pretty much a less spastic version of pogo/skank/punk dance. It fit the early nyhc vibe perfect. More stompin more arms and fist and danger and anger. Less fun & the general let's have fun and go wild. More like GOING NUTS. Lou Hawk is still my mosh idol. I always loved the random mid 30's guys that would show up cb's, coney, wetlands for the DMS type shows in the mid-late 90's. Those guys MOSHED. didn't care about nothing. I never moshed harder than when Breakdownwould play stuff off the demos or when 141/fatnuts (odd I know but those dudes always looked out for me) would play. I've hurt a couple people, some have let teeth, don't remember the night, made them puke or they've gone home with a black eye & some bruises. The good ole days I suppose, I don't miss them though.
I honestly cant remember the last time I moshed.

i'll probably get shit for this, but whatever...
totally into friends dancing and having a good time, watching out for each other, etc. it's sweet to see a band and people getting into it. of course, this works well when there's a certain level of respect and community among the people dancing.
can't stand the tough guy shit. like that whole cowardly spin kick into the people on the sides move. i mean, wtf? if you're gonna pull shit like that you're obviously just being a dick for the sake of your own insecurity.

also, if im clearly not in the mood to dance but want to be close enough to watch the band people shouldnt give me some annoyed look if i push them out of the way before crushing me. and i cant stand when there's just one kid dancing trying to rile everyone up and gives people shit if they just arent having it. that one loan kid always make me feel uncomfortable....sort of like when you have a meeting at work and the boss is super stoked and everyone else is sort of just sitting their staring at them like they're crazy.

Yeah if you're just running back and forth and shit, I can get into that. As soon as people start flailing their arms in the air, nearly (or actually) hitting people, that sucks and isn't fun for everyone else who can't enjoy music and just needs to make sure they aren't getting punched.

Tom and Drucker nailed it. "This is hardcore, you're gonna get hit" makes sense when its bodies and such flying around, but purposely punching people/kicking into the side of the "pit" (what an embarrassing term) is just stupid.

I've been meaning to write a half-serious zine about the ethics of moshing. Topics would include: Is there a moral difference between crowd killing and reckless moshing? Do we implicitly consent to the harms that may be brought upon us at hardcore show by our mere presence at said hardcore show? Is it permissible to head walk?
I realize I'm an egghead and no one will find this funny.

I agree with just about everything that was said. I didn't dance all the time only when a certain band/song got me in a frenzy. It's funny, when you're younger and smaller than most at a given show you're so down to get in the mix. But when you're older and have caught up in size, you're too "old"/lazy to dance all the time. at least, in my experience.
