mosh retirement for the most part.
i've never really minded getting hit by kids dancing super violently. i know where i'm standing, i know what's going to happen, so more often than not i'm prepared for it. i'm actually kinda stoked if it happens during a friend's band.
in my experience, the most common reason for a fight at a hardcore show, is because someone thinks they're above getting hit, and decides to retaliate. let it go, stop whining.

My 2 cents.
I like standing at the front of the crowd to see the stage presence, or in other words, the show aspect of the show. I always keep to the sides (usually behind someone that's bigger than me) so I'm not caught in the middle when there's slam dancing.
I think moshing is ok, but you gotta be careful. I remember one time when I got knocked into a mic stand at a Shitfit show, and I told the guy I didn't even want to mosh. Oh well.

theres a difference between moshing like an asshole and moshing hard..purposely moshing on girls and little kids to look tough and punching people in the face is an asshole move..and honestly this shit is more fun to me than that like line dance looking shit kids do now but hey whatever tickles your pickle...new york still has that flavor

Moshing is cool sometimes, but being a youngster and getting beat up by some dude that's nearly double your age is not cool.
I remember at a show in Edison once when I was 14, I was just watching the band(probably the Mongoloids) and some fat dude straight up punches me in the fucking face. I swore I broke my nose, but it was just bruised.
At another Edison show, Jeremy from Suburban Scum kept walking back and forth along the back of the "pit" and kept pushing dudes that kept moshing next to us away. Whether or not it was on purpose in order to protect us or something, I don't know, but it sure felt that way. My friend and I called him the "mosh guardian" that night.

I've been meaning to write a half-serious zine about the ethics of moshing. Topics would include: Is there a moral difference between crowd killing and reckless moshing? Do we implicitly consent to the harms that may be brought upon us at hardcore show by our mere presence at said hardcore show? Is it permissible to head walk? I realize I'm an egghead and no one will find this funny. Please do this marcos make this happen!
