I love Westgate. I work for a skate shop in Red Bank and talk to every kid who walks in about how they should go home and watch Brandon Westgate videos since (for some reason) nobody watches skate videos anymore which is dumb. i grew up watching skate videos... i havent skated in a couple of years but still watch skate videos daily. alba is cool. skateboarding is very cool. wish i never got fat and stopped skating. I always was a huge fan of the sayerville foundation... dont know really why but always liked that spot alot. any idea if its still around? im sure it is but is anything skateable anymore?

I skated as a youngster but dropped out of it at a pretty young age because i sucked at it. I do still appreciate a good skate video though as well as all the shit it led me to get into, namely punk music. I feel like skate culture changed a lot though. I remember when i was a kid all the older skater dudes were pretty much just punks and now I feel like younger kids who skate are more into that weird odd future, supreme clothing kinda shit rather than the epitaph records stuff I remember being popular among skaters when I was a kid.
I guess that kinda speaks to how punk/hc in general aren't as popular anymore.

when I was 11 or 12 I attempted skating. There was an abandoned a&p on Plainfield Ave, and I would skate around the parking lot. Then all those posers with their rollerblades invaded (it was like 1994 after all!) They called me gay, I dodged a slurpee and one of the older kids threw my skateboard over the fence. I haven't skated much since.

i started skating when i was about 13; got an alien workshop deck at brave new world in toms river and pretty much sucked. when i got older and my friends started getting into drugs i eventually went from being the worst skater in my neighborhood to the only guy over 21 who skated at all, period. since then skating has been my main way to go and be alone and get weird in a semi-acceptable fashion.
i moved to highland park a year ago and started skating at the edison skatepark almost every day. that place is such a fucking junk heap, which i find sort of charming. i still can't figure out if the high school kids i see there every day think i'm a loser creep idiot or not, but i've been learning lots of new tricks.
i know there are better spots to skate, but edison is like 5 minutes from my house, so it's really convenient. if i finish work after it gets dark out, i'll usually go to the wal-mart on rt 27 and skate their painted curbs, where i am positive that everyone thinks i am way too old to be skateboarding in a department store parking lot. but whatever; thats just like, their opinion.
in the last few years, there have been a lot of cool pros and companies coming out and making it cool to be an older skater doing more old-fashioned street tricks like no complies, wallies, slappy grinds etc. i'm especially hyped on Fancy Lad from Boston, who are basically god's gift to skateboarding in the not-taking-yourself-so-seriously department. a lot of people take skateboarding way too fucking seriously.
here's their last full length:

I used to skate on the reg, and work at a shop / garage sized park called Board Sports. Here is a picture of me on the ramp wearing a vest and basketball shorts doing a 5-0 When I went off to college I still skated, but had to focus on the thing I was spending vast amounts of money to eventually pay back over the rest of my life. I still skate, but after a period of having no health insurance I lost my touch a bit. I have been on a board daily for transportation to say the least, but only 4-10 days out of the month are spent getting radical. I skate Astoria park in Queens (cause it's in my hood) when school is in session and at night (when cops are not fucking kicking me out for the park being closed at "dusk" - tell that to the people jogging on the track then too, assholes) At this point in my skating career, all I want out of life is to just skate mini. I know of ramps that exist, but to a person who chose not to own a car anymore this is one of the few reasons I regret it.

yesterday i went to the edison park and it was gone. like, all the ramps had been removed and there was a lot full of dirt and concrete chunks instead. where am i supposed to skate now? ann van is obviously a better park, but it's like a half hour drive from highland park and if i leave after work i probably won't get there before dark. anyone know if there are lights? i'm guessing not.

Did they re-pave it? I went there around Christmas time, and the ground was so bumpy, and the transitions were rough. Thought I was gonna fall, so I went easy. I miss the old layout though, more ramps.

If they had paved it , wouldve taken way more time. The old set up was definitely cool, I'm in love with that steep "brick" quarter and wallride section. Spent most of my time in there.
