Switzerland is awesome. Spent some time in Luzern, Rigi, Basel, and Zurich this summer. Definitely spend some time in the Alps. Should be very lovely that time of year. As for cheap places to stay.... well, it's Switzerland, don't expect anything.
Spain and Marseille are very cheap though!

I went to Lyon in 2003. It was dirty, crowded and very modern. If you like NYC then you might like it there.
Marseille; if you go away from the coast and into the actual city it will look similar to the lower east side of NYC during the 1980s. Tons of garbage, graffiti and prostitutes. We played a SHARP bar there while on Black Kites tour.

I was just in France and Barcelona. Wasnt in Lyon, but I was in Paris and Nice. Both are beautiful and worth seeing. As far as places to stay, search for hostels. Probably your best bet. Everything is expensive in France for the most part. Barcelona is amazing. Cheaper then France as well so youll be able to do more with your buck.
